Cheapest option for low walls. Lasts about 15–25 years before it rots.

Retaining walls are priced per square foot of wall face: the length of the wall times its height, including the buried course. The material sets the base price, and height drives it up quickly because taller walls hold back more soil and need reinforcement, deeper footings and sometimes an engineer.

Enter the wall face area, pick a material and height, and add drainage, excavation or removal. You get a low, typical and high installed price with the labor share.

How the retaining wall cost estimate works

  1. Enter the wall face area (length × height) in square feet.
  2. Multiply it by the installed price per sq ft for the material you chose.
  3. Adjust for wall height and your local cost level.
  4. Add the extras you ticked, such as removal, and any permit fee.
  5. Show the result as a low, typical and high total, split into materials, labor and fees.

Multiply the wall length by its height in feet. A 50 ft wall 3 ft tall is 150 sq ft. Add about 6 inches of height for the buried first course.

What affects retaining wall cost

  • Height. Walls over about 4 feet usually need geogrid reinforcement, an engineered design and a permit. Cost per square foot rises sharply.
  • Material. Timber is cheapest but shortest-lived. Natural stone ranges from moderate (fieldstone) to very expensive (cut stone).
  • Drainage. Gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe behind the wall keep water pressure from pushing it over. Skipping it is the most common cause of failure.
  • Site access and soil. Walls that machines can't reach must be built by hand. Clay soil and steep slopes need more excavation and base material.
  • Curves, steps and caps. Curves, stairs built into the wall and cap stones add materials and labor.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a retaining wall cost?

A wall 50 feet long and 3 feet tall (150 square feet of face) typically costs about $2,700 to $7,200 in timber, $3,500 to $8,000 in concrete block and $5,000 to $14,700 in natural stone, including drainage.

How much does a retaining wall cost per square foot?

Expect $15 to $40 per square foot for timber, $20 to $45 for concrete block, $25 to $50 for poured concrete and $30 to $90 for natural stone, before drainage and extras.

What is the cheapest type of retaining wall?

Pressure-treated timber is usually the cheapest to build, followed by segmental concrete block. Block lasts much longer, so it is often cheaper over the life of the wall.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Many towns require a permit and an engineered design for walls over about 4 feet, or for any wall that supports a driveway, building or slope. Check with your local building department.
