A paver patio needs more than pavers: a compacted gravel base, a one-inch layer of bedding sand, edge restraints and joint sand. Getting the base quantities right is what keeps the patio flat for decades.
Enter the patio size and pick a paver size. The calculator gives you the number of pavers with a cutting allowance, tons of base gravel and sand, the edge restraint length and bags of polymeric joint sand.
How to use the paver calculator
- Measure the patio length and width in feet and multiply for square feet.
- Divide by the area of one paver (width × length in inches ÷ 144).
- Add 5% for straight patterns or 10 to 15% for herringbone and curves.
- Work out base gravel: area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 for cubic yards, plus about 15% for compaction.
- Add a 1 inch layer of bedding sand and edge restraint around the open edges.
Pavers = area × (1 + waste) ÷ (paver width × length ÷ 144). Base (yd³) = area × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × 1.15. Sand (yd³) = area ÷ 12 ÷ 27.
Pavers per square foot by size

|---|---|---|
| 4 × 8 in | 4.5 | 473 |
| 6 × 6 in | 4 | 420 |
| 6 × 9 in | 2.67 | 280 |
| 12 × 12 in | 1 | 105 |
| 16 × 16 in | 0.56 | 60 |
| 12 × 24 in | 0.5 | 53 |
Tips before you buy
- Use 4 to 6 inches of compacted base for patios and walkways, and 8 to 12 inches for driveways.
- Compact the base in 2 inch layers with a plate compactor.
- Use coarse concrete sand for bedding, not play sand or stone dust.
- Slope the patio about 1/8 inch per foot away from the house.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need for a 10x10 patio?
A 10 × 10 patio is 100 square feet. With 4 × 8 inch pavers that's 450 pavers, or about 473 with 5% extra for cuts.
How much base do I need for a paver patio?
At 4 inches deep, plan on about 1.4 cubic yards (roughly 2 tons) of crushed stone base per 100 square feet, including compaction.
How much sand do I need under pavers?
A 1 inch bedding layer takes about 0.31 cubic yards, or roughly 0.4 tons, of sand per 100 square feet.
How many pavers are in a pallet?
It depends on the paver. A pallet of 4 × 8 inch holland stones usually covers about 100 to 120 square feet; large pavers cover less per pallet because they are thicker. Ask your supplier for the square feet per pallet.
